James Michael Curley is again elected mayor of Boston.

Curley (D), with 111,824 votes, defeats acting mayor John E. Kerrigan, with 60,413, Fire Commissioner William Arthur Reilly, with 46,135, and School Committee member Joseph Lee Jr., with 10,042 to win his fourth term in the office. Turnout is 247,295 or 66.7%. Curley leaves the U.S. House of Representatives Congress in mid-term to become mayor, opening up the seat for the candidacy of John F. Kennedy in 1946.*
